The White Sturgeon are native to several large North American rivers that drain to the Pacific Ocean. They primarily live in estuaries of large rivers, but migrate to spawning grounds in freshwater. Back in the early 1900s overfishing for caviar almost drove this animal to near extinction. Though due to conservation efforts the population has increased substantially.
White sturgeon are commonly found in deep and soft bottomed areas of estuaries. They are often spotted in the lower Fraser River of British Columbia but they can be found in areas along the West Coast, from northern Mexico up to the Aleutian Islands in Alaska.
At sexual maturity, A sturgeon can have a maximum recorded length of 6.1 m (20 ft), with common lengths around 2.1 m (6.9 ft) Their age commonly ranges from 11 to 34 years old. Though there are rumoured measurements of a sturgeon caught at a whopping weight of 816 kg (1,799 lb) and an estimated age of 104 years old.
